To survive - that was their promise.
When war turns paradise into hell,
a story of friendship is forged in the flames of history.
Assigned to record the “heroic final moments” of fallen comrades in letters to their families — what did he truly witness?
In 1944, during the final stages of the Pacific War, 21-year-old Japanese soldier Tamura is stationed on the beautiful southern island of Peleliu. An aspiring manga artist, Tamura’s talent earns him a special assignment: serving as the unit’s “record keeper of merit, ” tasked with writing letters that portray the honorable deaths of his fellow soldiers to their grieving families.
On September 15, U.S. forces launch their assault on Peleliu. More than 40, 000 elite troops descend upon the island, facing roughly 10, 000 Japanese soldiers. Relentless bombardment, unceasing gunfire, and the anguished cries of dying men etch themselves into Tamura’s mind.
Comrades standing beside him vanish in an instant. In the constant shadow of death, the soldiers endure unbearable hunger, thirst, and disease. As their forces are steadily driven into a corner, even a final charge is forbidden. Instead, they are forced into a desperate war of attrition, fighting on while battered and broken.
Tamura writes of his friends’ deaths — sometimes reshaping the truth into stories of noble sacrifice — uncertain of what is right anymore. His greatest support becomes Yoshiki, a dependable corporal and fellow recruit. Encouraging one another and sharing their anguish, the two young men form a profound bond amid the chaos.
Each soldier had a life. Each had a family. None wished to die — they only longed to return home to those they loved.
In the end, only 34 Japanese soldiers survived.
In a world defined by cruelty and despair, Tamura and Yoshiki struggle to hold on to their humanity. What did these two young soldiers truly witness on the battlefield of madness?
